10 Numerical Reasoning Tips for the Civil Service Exam (With Examples)
For many examinees, the Numerical Ability section is the scariest part of the CSE — usually because the last time they solved a word problem was years ago in school. Here's the honest good news: CSE math is not advanced math. It's arithmetic, fractions, percentages, ratios, basic algebra, and number sequences — high school material tested under time pressure. The challenge isn't difficulty; it's speed, rust, and traps.
These ten tips, with worked examples, cover the techniques that make the biggest difference.
1. Master fractions, decimals, and percentages as one skill
A huge share of CSE numerical items involve converting between these three forms. Memorize the common equivalents until they're automatic: 1/4 = 0.25 = 25%, 1/5 = 0.2 = 20%, 3/4 = 0.75 = 75%, 1/8 = 0.125 = 12.5%, 1/3 ≈ 0.333 = 33.3%. When a problem says "What is 75% of 240?", you should instantly think "3/4 of 240 = 180" instead of multiplying 240 × 0.75 on paper. The conversion table in your head is worth more than any other single piece of memorization.
2. Translate word problems into equations, phrase by phrase
Word problems become mechanical once you translate the English (or Filipino) into math. "Is" means equals. "Of" means multiply. "More than" means add. "Twice a number" means 2x. Example: "Five more than twice a number is 17. What is the number?" translates directly to 2x + 5 = 17, so 2x = 12, so x = 6. Don't try to "see" the answer — translate first, then solve.
3. In number sequences, check differences first, then ratios
Sequence items ("What comes next: 3, 6, 12, 24, …?") follow a small set of patterns. Check in this order: constant difference (add/subtract the same number), changing difference (the gaps themselves form a pattern), constant ratio (multiply — the example above doubles, so the answer is 48), alternating patterns (two interleaved sequences), and squares/cubes (1, 4, 9, 16 or 1, 8, 27). Running through this checklist beats staring at the numbers waiting for inspiration.
4. Learn the three percentage setups
Nearly every percentage item is one of three questions. Finding the part: "What is 20% of 350?" → 0.20 × 350 = 70. Finding the rate: "42 is what percent of 120?" → 42 ÷ 120 = 0.35 = 35%. Finding the whole: "30 is 25% of what number?" → 30 ÷ 0.25 = 120. Identify which of the three you're being asked before touching the numbers, and percentage problems stop being confusing.
5. Use the answer choices — work backwards
The CSE is multiple choice, and the correct answer is sitting right there among the options. For many problems, testing the choices is faster than solving algebraically. Example: "A number divided by 4, plus 7, equals 15. What is the number?" Rather than setting up x/4 + 7 = 15, try a middle-sized choice: if the options are 24, 28, 32, 36, test 32 → 32/4 + 7 = 15. Correct, done. Start with the middle value so one test tells you whether to go higher or lower.
6. Estimate before you compute
Before doing exact arithmetic, ballpark the answer. If a problem multiplies 198 by 51, the answer is near 200 × 50 = 10,000 — so any choice near 10,098 is right and choices like 1,009 or 100,980 are instantly out. Estimation catches careless decimal and zero errors, and sometimes eliminates every wrong choice on its own, letting you skip the exact computation entirely.
7. For ratio problems, find the value of one "part"
Ratio items ("Two numbers are in the ratio 3:5 and their sum is 64…") all yield to the same move: add the ratio parts (3 + 5 = 8), divide the total by that (64 ÷ 8 = 8 per part), then multiply back (the numbers are 24 and 40). The same technique handles sharing money, mixing solutions, and dividing work among people.
8. Watch for the classic traps
CSE numerical items love a few specific traps. Unit mismatches: a problem gives minutes but asks for hours, or gives centimeters and asks for meters — always check what unit the answer requires. "Each" versus "total": a question may ask what each person receives, while one answer choice is the total. The off-by-one trap in counting: fence posts, pages read "from page 12 to page 30" (that's 19 pages, not 18). Wrong answer choices are specifically designed around these mistakes, which is why they feel so tempting.
9. Budget your time: one minute per item, skip freely
With 170 items in 190 minutes on the Professional level, you have just over a minute per question on average — and numerical items compete for time against faster verbal items. A good rule: if a math problem shows no path forward after 60–90 seconds, mark it, guess if you must, and move on. Ten stubborn minutes on one problem can cost you eight easier points elsewhere. There is no penalty for wrong answers on the CSE, so never leave an item blank.
