AFPSAT Abstract Reasoning: Every Pattern Type Explained (and How to Get Fast at Them)
Of the AFPSAT's three sections, Abstract Reasoning is the one that decides the most outcomes. Verbal and numerical skills come from years of schooling; almost nobody has practiced figure-pattern questions before their first reviewer. That's bad news for the unprepared and great news for you — because abstract reasoning is the most learnable section on the test. There is a finite set of pattern types, they repeat constantly, and once you can name them on sight, questions that once took ninety seconds take fifteen.
This guide catalogs the pattern types and gives you a method for the ones that resist quick recognition.
What abstract reasoning questions look like
The typical item shows a sequence of figures — boxes containing shapes, dots, lines, or symbols — and asks which figure comes next, or which option completes the series. Variants include "odd one out" (which figure doesn't belong to the group) and matrix problems (a 3×3 grid of figures with one cell missing). No words, no numbers as such — just visual logic.
The AFPSAT runs this as one of its three separately timed sections, alongside Verbal and Numerical Reasoning, within its 150-item total. Because the section has its own clock and closes when time ends, speed here is not optional — and speed comes from knowing the pattern taxonomy below.
The core pattern types
Rotation. The figure turns by a fixed amount each step — commonly 45 or 90 degrees, clockwise or counterclockwise. Check rotation first whenever the same shape appears in every frame at different orientations. Watch for the trap option that rotates the correct amount in the wrong direction.
Reflection (mirroring). The figure flips across a vertical or horizontal axis, sometimes alternating with rotation. Rotation and reflection are easy to confuse: a rotated L and a mirrored L look similar. Trace one distinctive corner of the shape through the frames to tell them apart.
Progression (growing/shrinking). Something increases or decreases step by step — the number of sides, the count of dots, the size of the shape, or the length of a line. Whenever elements are countable, count them across every frame before anything else; counting solves a huge share of items outright.
Alternation. Two (or more) sequences interleave: frames 1, 3, 5 follow one pattern while frames 2, 4 follow another; or a shape alternates black/white/black/white. If a sequence looks chaotic, split it into odd and even positions and check each half separately — "chaos" very often resolves into two simple alternating patterns.
Addition and subtraction of elements. Each frame adds or removes a component — a dot appears in a new corner, a line is removed. Compare consecutive frames pairwise and ask: what exactly changed from this frame to the next? The change, repeated, is the rule.
Movement (position patterns). An element travels around the frame — a dot moving clockwise through the corners, a shaded cell stepping through a grid. Track each moving element separately; complex items move two elements at different speeds.
Combined patterns. Harder items stack rules: a shape rotates 90° and alternates color and gains a dot each step. Nothing new is required — you just apply the checklist to each attribute (shape, orientation, color, count, position) independently.
A reliable method when recognition fails
When a pattern doesn't jump out, run the SCOPS check — five attributes, in order:
Shape: does the shape itself change, cycle, or repeat?
Count: does the number of anything (sides, dots, lines) go up or down?
Orientation: is anything rotating or flipping?
Position: is anything moving within the frame?
Shading: does color or fill alternate or progress?
Almost every AFPSAT abstract item is governed by one or two of these five attributes. Checking them systematically takes about twenty seconds and beats staring at the figures hoping for insight. For matrix (3×3) problems, run the check across rows first, then columns — the rule usually holds in both directions.
For "odd one out" items, reverse the logic: find the property four figures share (same number of sides, all rotations of one shape, all symmetric) and the fifth lacks.
Time strategy for the section
Aim for a steady pace with two speeds: pattern-recognized items should take 10–20 seconds; SCOPS items get up to about a minute. If a figure still resists after a full SCOPS pass, eliminate the options that are obviously wrong (wrong shape count, wrong direction), pick the best survivor, mark it, and move on — remember, once the section's timer ends, it's closed, so a stubborn item must never strand easy items unanswered behind it. Leave no blanks as the clock runs out.
One more exam-day note: abstract items are answered fastest with your eyes and a fingertip, not elaborate sketching — but for movement patterns, lightly jotting the positions (corner 1, corner 3, corner 5…) in your booklet margin catches step-sizes your eyes miss.
How to practice (a 2-week plan)
Days 1–3: learn the taxonomy. Do small untimed sets and, for every item, name the pattern type out loud — "rotation, 90 clockwise," "alternation, two sequences." Naming builds the recognition reflex. Days 4–7: drill your weak types. Most people struggle first with combined patterns and matrices; give them double reps. Days 8–14: mixed, randomized, timed sets at exam pace, reviewing every explanation — including for correct answers, because explanations teach you the fastest route to answers you found slowly.
